Description

Description

Mehran Bombay Biryani Masala makes the tangy, potato-and-meat Bombay biryani in one step: a balanced blend of coriander, red chilli, black pepper, cumin, clove, cinnamon, cardamom, bay leaf and star anise with salt and souring spices, so you do not need to grind or measure anything. The 65 g carton is 5 g more than the 60 g Shan pack and sells for the same ₹98 at 72shop.in.

Why Mehran

  • Made by Mehran Spice & Food Industries, Karachi – recipe mixes since 1975, six years before Shan.
  • FSSC 22000, HACCP and ISO 9001 certified, registered with the US FDA, and exported to more than 40 countries.
  • Customers here call it “quite spicy” and say it “makes some great biryani” – use a little less of the pack for a milder pot.

How to cook Bombay biryani with it

The full recipe is printed on the carton. The method is the classic one:

  1. Fry sliced onions in oil until golden; add chopped tomatoes and cook until the oil separates.
  2. Add 1 kg meat or chicken, garlic and ginger paste, 1 cup yogurt, halved potatoes and the Mehran Bombay Biryani mix. Stir-fry for 10 minutes.
  3. Add water (about 4 cups for mutton, 2 for chicken), cover and cook on low heat until tender.
  4. Layer with three-quarters-cooked basmati rice, cover tightly and steam (dum) on low heat for 10 minutes.

Questions & answers

Mehran or Shan Bombay Biryani – which is better?

Both are genuine Karachi brands. Mehran gives you 65 g for the same ₹98 as Shan’s 60 g, comes from the older, FSSC 22000-certified house, and is the pick of our own kitchen for biryani. If you grew up on the Shan taste, stay with Shan – we stock both.

How many people does one 65 g pack serve?

A family pot – about 1 kg of meat or chicken with 1 kg of rice, roughly 8 servings. Follow the quantities on the carton.

Is Mehran Bombay Biryani Masala spicy?

It is on the spicier side – a customer review says “quite spicy, so use limited quantity”. Use two-thirds of the pack for a milder biryani.

Is this the original imported Mehran pack?

Yes. Factory-sealed Mehran cartons imported from Pakistan, never repacked, with GST included and a GST invoice on every order.
